Lions offense progressed, defense regressed (9:18 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: The Detroit Lions accomplished everything they needed offensively this offseason. Wide receiver Calvin Johnson looks healthy, quarterback Matthew Stafford improved his footwork, running back Reggie Bush appears fast and new receiving weapons Golden Tate and rookie Eric Ebron look like great fits at wide receiver and tight end. On defense and special teams, though, questions remain, and those two units will likely determine the Lions' ceiling in 2014. Penalties could also remain an issue as the Lions had 25 combined in the final two preseason games.

Green-Ellis, Moorman among early wave of NFL cuts (6:40 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: The Law Firm has closed up shop in Cincinnati. Running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis was released by the Bengals on Friday, among a handful of players out of jobs - for now - as NFL teams started to trim their rosters to get down to the mandatory 53 players by Saturday afternoon. Green-Ellis was Cincinnati's top rusher the past two seasons, but the running back with the amusing nickname was made expendable once the Bengals drafted LSU's Jeremy Hill in the second round in May. Cincinnati also waived linebacker Brandon Joiner, defensive tackle LaKendrick Ross and quarterback Tyler Wilson. Also among the announced cuts: Buffalo punter Brian Moorman and quarterback Jordan Palmer, Jacksonville center Mike Brewster, Atlanta linebacker Pat Angerer and Chicago running back Jordan Lynch, a former Heisman trophy finalist as a quarterback at Northern Illinois.

NFL roundup: 49ers LB Smith suspended 9 games (6:34 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: The NFL suspended San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith for the first nine games of the season for violating the league's substance-abuse and personal-conduct policies. Smith, 24, will be eligible to return to the 49ers' active roster on Nov. 10 following the team's Nov. 9 game against New Orleans. "Our organization has known this decision would come and we have prepared for it," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. It was his second such arrest since entering the NFL in 2011.

Yahoo! Sports: ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- Newly signed backup quarterback Jordan Palmer and veteran punter Brian Moorman were among 10 players released by the Buffalo Bills.

Bills’ initial cuts include Jordan Palmer, Brian Moorman (4:28 PM)
Pro Football Talk - Mike Florio: The Buffalo Bills have commenced the process of trimming the roster from 75 to 53.  To get there, the Bills got rid of one of their newest and oldest players. Gone is quarterback Jordan Palmer, who signed with the Bills earlier this week.  Also gone is punter Brian Moorman, who spent 11-plus seasons with the…

Bolts bounce cornerback Crezdon Butler (4:17 PM)
Pro Football Talk - Mike Florio: Cornerback Crezdon Butler was believed to be on the roster bubble in San Diego.  He was. Per a league source, the Chargers have released Butler.  A fifth-round pick of the Steelers in 2010, Butler has played for the Cardinals (2011), Washington (2012), Cardinals again (2012), Bills (2012) and Chargers (2013). Bears' defense is an aging whine (2:45 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: The 2013 season had just ended in disaster for the Chicago Bears and general manager Phil Emery sat down to address the media about how he was going to solve their defensive collapse. The 2014 training camp and preseason have ended, and the Bears' defense is apparently set for the opener with Buffalo. The Bears are 1.09 years older per man than they were last year at the starting positions and older at nine of the 11 positions, than on opening day last year. The only spots where they're younger are strong side linebacker, with Shea McClellin five years younger than James Anderson was, and right defensive end with Jared Allen a year younger than Julius Peppers was.

Bills unsure at quarterback heading into season (2:25 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: The Buffalo Bills have spent an inordinate amount of time worrying about their backup quarterbacks the past couple weeks, and there still is plenty to gripe about now that the regular season is about to begin in Chicago. Simply put, it would be a safe bet to say that Buffalo's backup quarterbacking duo -- Jeff Tuel and Jordan Palmer at this point -- may be the weakest in the league, although possibly subject to change as a part of the NFL's final roster juggling. But as the Bills try to put behind them a miserable preseason where they went 1-4 and were anemic on offense, they also have to be concerned with the play of their starting quarterback, EJ Manuel. Only then did coach Doug Marrone sit his starters down for the remainder of the game.

Steelers eyeing needs after uneven preseason (1:37 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: One of Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin's pet phrases is: ''Your tape is your resume.'' Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey is hoping he won't have to polish his up when rosters are trimmed to 53 players on Saturday. The former first-round pick made a compelling argument during training camp, making contributions on special teams and catching a team-high nine passes for 98 yards during Pittsburgh's 1-3 preseason. Heyward-Bey is fighting for a spot behind Pro Bowler Antonio Brown, second-year prospect Markus Wheaton and veteran Lance Moore on the depth chart and seemed to get better as he grew more familiar with offensive coordinator Todd Haley's multi-faceted approach. ''I just went out there with the mindset of getting better each and every day, dealing with the coaching staff and I think that's a good way to go about it,'' Heyward-Bey said.

Bills Focus: Defensive Depth and Versatility (10:00 AM)

Conflicting reports regarding Bills offers (9:26 AM)
Pro Football Talk - Mike Florio: Eventually, a winning bidder will emerge for the Bills, with a check that precisely identifies the exact dollars, down to the 00/100.  For now, it’s unclear how much that amount will be.  Especially since the reports are conflicting regarding the amounts that have been offered. Last week, the Buffalo News reported that Sabres owner Terry…

Why Chandler and Gilmore sat out (8:24 AM)
Buffalo Bills Blogs - Chris Brown: In the preseason finale Thursday almost all the starters opened the game on offense and defense. There were however a couple of missing pieces from the lineups on each side of the ball. The offense was missing their starting tight end and left guard. The defense was missing their starting cornerback opposite Leodis McKelvin. Here’s […]

Bills WR Watkins hurt in 23-0 loss to Lions (11:42 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: The Buffalo Bills lost more than their preseason finale Thursday night, when rookie receiver Sammy Watkins did not return after aggravating a rib injury. The Detroit Lions, on the other hand, have several big decisions to make before establishing their 53-player regular-season roster following a 23-0 win over the Bills. With time running out in the first half and perhaps their tenure in Detroit, third-string quarterback Kellen Moore and backup receiver Corey Fuller made one last case to show they deserve to make the final cut before Saturday. Moore found time in the pocket to hit Fuller on a perfectly placed 25-yard touchdown pass over the middle with 9 seconds left in the second quarter to put the Lions ahead 17-0.

In the second quarter, he led the Browns on a five-play 80-yard drive, which was capped by a one-yard TD pass to Jim Dray. Manziel finished 6 of 17 for 83 yards and no interceptions.

Bills' Sammy Watkins re-injures rib vs. Lions, ruled out of game (8:19 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: The Buffalo Bills decided they wanted to get injured wide receiver Sammy Watkins some repetitions in a meaningless preseason game. It appears to be a bad decision. Watkins suffered a bruised rib injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers two weeks ago, sat out last week but was given the go Thursday against the Detroit Lions. On the Bills' ninth offensive play, Watkins was hit on an incomplete pass by Lions linebacker Ashlee Palmer and grabbed his ribs afterward. Watkins left the game and did not return. You now have to wonder if he'll be questionable for Week 1's game at the Chicago Bears. [ Smack talk season is back at Yahoo Sports: Sign up and play free Fantasy Football! ] EJ Manuel was awful Thursday, as he had been all preseason. Sure, you want your quarterback and receiver to work together in game action, but the Bills have had five games, and Watkins had 35 snaps in three of them entering Thursday. Was it really necessary to play the rookie you ransomed the franchise's future to trade up for? The Bills made a mistake playing him. The hit from Palmer was your garden-variety NFL contact — nothing unusually hard. If that aggravated Watkins, then the kid shouldn't have been out there tonight. Watkins is banged up, and never should have played. Manuel doesn't appear to be getting better. Head coach Doug Marrone can't feel too good about himself right now. He had better hope that Watkins heals thoroughly in the next 10 days, or it could be another long season in Buffalo.  - - - - - - - Eric Edholm is a writer for Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports. Yahoo! Sports: The Buffalo Bills defense can take a break. ''Yes, absolutely, I'm looking to play those guys,'' Marrone said this week. The touchdowns - Manuel's 14-yard pass to Mike Williams and Fred Jackson's 8-yard run - were the first Buffalo's starters had scored after being limited to four field goals on their first 18 drives this preseason.

Those injuries were partially responsible for Detroit's acquisition of free agent receiver Golden Tate during the offseason. Mankins traded; Bradford, Raji on IR (10:13 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: On the NFL's first preseason cutdown day, a trade and several key players going on injured reserve overshadowed other moves. In an unusual transaction for its timing, New England sent six-time Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins to Tampa Bay on Tuesday for tight end Tim Wright and a draft choice. The Patriots apparently are satisfied with a young group of blockers, and the Buccaneers were desperate to improve their offensive line. ''He has a history of a certain type of play in the league,'' new Bucs coach Lovie Smith said, adding that the 10th-year pro will bring leadership on and off the field.

Bills' hopes hinge on familiar question: QB (9:05 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: Ralph Wilson often lamented the one obstacle standing in the way of the Bills' success during their current 14-season playoff drought was a failure to identify a franchise quarterback. From Alex Van Pelt to Drew Bledsoe and now EJ Manuel, none of the eight quarterbacks who started at least eight games for Buffalo since 2000 has held the job beyond three seasons. ''With EJ, obviously we're looking for him to progress and to keep coming along,'' coach Doug Marrone said. Though the defense under new coordinator Jim Schwartz remains Buffalo's strength, the offense continues to be a work in progress.

Orlovsky, Moore will see time at QB for Lions (8:34 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: Judging by their easygoing demeanor in the Detroit Lions' locker room, you wouldn't know that reserve quarterbacks Dan Orlovsky and Kellen Moore were approaching their final chance to prove to new coach Jim Caldwell that they deserve to back up starter Matthew Stafford this season. Caldwell confirmed Monday that both Orlovsky and Moore will see a significant increase in playing time in the Lions' final preseason game Thursday against the Buffalo Bills as the team decides whether it will keep two or three quarterbacks on the final 53-man roster. ''We'll take a look at (Moore and Orlovsky) and see how they manage the offense. ''It will be a pretty good opportunity to show what they can do.'' The team's decision to re-sign Orlovsky during the offseason was met with skepticism, since the four seasons he spent in Detroit from 2005-2008 were largely defined by his seven ineffective starts during the team's winless 2008 campaign.

NFL players would least like to play for Oakland, new poll claims (12:22 PM)
Yahoo! Sports: All NFL destinations are not created equal, and according to players, Oakland is less equal than anywhere else. An ESPN/NFL Nation Confidential poll surveyed 100-plus players to find the least desirable location to play in the NFL. The question was this: "The only way I'd play for [team name] is if they doubled my salary." The "winner"? Oakland, with 23 percent of the 82 respondents. Following Oakland were: • Buffalo Bills (19 percent) • Cleveland Browns (16 percent) • Jacksonville Jaguars (9 percent) • Green Bay Packers (6 percent). Good news, Jets and Redskins fans! You're not the worst! You can probably extrapolate why these teams are on this list: incompetent ownership, poor winning tradition, cold weather, harsh fans. Still, Raiders players both past and present were not exactly thrilled with the poll's results. [ Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football: Sign up and join a league today! ] "I've never heard anybody that said they didn't want to play for the Raiders, so that's pretty shocking," Oakland DB Charles Woodson said. "Over the years, I've known and talked to countless players that said, 'Man, I would love to come play in the Silver and Black.' So I think that poll might be kind of skewed." "I would play for this team if they paid me half of what they pay me, and I have taken pay cuts to stay," said Jets WR Jacoby Ford, who played for Oakland from 2010 to 2013. "I guarantee you, if half those guys would have the opportunity to come play for this franchise, they'd be on board." Certainly, this is a dispiriting poll for the Raiders, Bills, and other teams. But It's also a fire lit under the teams' collective tail: if a guy refused to play for you for double what he's making, perhaps the problem isn't the player. ____ Jay Busbee is a writer for Yahoo Sports.
